Dear friends of The Fort,
Every day, I am reminded of the familial setting that we have fostered at Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center. The entire Fort family—staff members, donors, students, educators, community partners—plays a critical role in co-creating a safe, fun and affirming space where everyone feels welcome. One key branch of our family tree that is mostly “behind the scenes”, yet instrumental to our success, is our Board of Directors. Their organizational leadership provides the stability, institutional knowledge and shared decision-making that supports our overall growth and health.
The board establishes our strategic direction as well as overseeing our governance, fiduciary and ethical health, and adherence to internal policies. Each month, board members graciously volunteer dozens of hours of their time in meetings and strategy sessions, reviewing financial statements and analyzing our impact and evaluation data to assess our progress in achieving the programmatic goals that will further our mission.
In December, we bid farewell to our out-going board chair Ann Cazaban, who “termed-off” the board after 6 years of service—a truly admirable achievement that exemplifies her commitment and belief in our mission. Ann is an awesome leader and mentor who brought her professional expertise to the boardroom in the areas of nonprofit management and fund development. Thank you Ann for your unwavering support. And thank you for believing in The Fort. You will be missed!
FWTEC’s next phase of leadership begins with newly elected board chair Larry Voelkers at the helm. Larry has been a staunch supporter of FWTEC for over 7 years both on and off the court. Larry and his wife Dawn have two daughters who have competed in the junior tennis program at The Fort, as well as volunteered in our TennisWorks programs. Larry is tennis player himself and regularly participates in our in-house leagues and drills. Larry brings his business acumen to the boardroom and will lead us in achieving our strategic plan's goals by instituting processes, procedures and structures that will increase our efficiencies and effectiveness.
Transitions within any organization or family can be challenging. But working through adversity together can make any group stronger. I am confident that we will continue to build upon the strong foundation that has been paved for us, which will springboard The Fort to the next level!
See you on the courts!
The Head Fred (aka Executive Director)
