Brandon Heath is USPTA certified and teaches both adults and juniors as well as assists in the Education programs. He started playing tennis when he was 10 in the Urban Tennis Program at Kenwood Park in Minneapolis. He continued playing at Minneapolis South High and coached in the summers for Urban Tennis. Brandon attended the University of St Thomas and was a member of the varsity team for all four years, finishing his career playing #1 singles. During his time at St. Thomas he began teaching part time at Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center. Following college Brandon headed to Los Angeles where he worked for the LA Tennis Academy for nine months before returning to Minneapolis in 2007 to coach full-time at FWTEC.

Ali coordinates Well’s Academy, working with 9th-12th grade students in our Tennis2College program. Ali has been the Varsity head coach for both the boys and girls tennis teams for 11 years at Hopkins High School. She has also taught middle school for 11 years in Edina. Ali played D1 tennis at Penn State and graduated with a degree in Secondary Education and Communications. She works at FWTEC as both a tennis instructor and Program Coordinator for the Well’s Academy high school program.

Judy Long is certified both as an elementary education teacher and PTR tennis coach. Judy has been working at Fred Wells since 2005 and coordinates 3rd-5th grade programs for Tennis2College, including Citizens of the Court (C2) and Summer Tennis and Fitness Camp. In addition, Judy coaches and drills with beginning and intermediate tennis players every week. In 2010, Judy received the Breaking Barriers Award celebrating individuals or organizations that have broken barriers, overcome challenges and/or strived to provide athletic opportunities for girls and women of all races, ages and levels of ability. She has coached volleyball, badminton and tennis for 20 years and strongly believes that “play is the optimum state of learning!”

Reid Olsen is the Assistant Manager of Tennis Center Operations at FWTEC as well as a part time tennis instructor at Fred Wells since 2007. Reid began teaching tennis at Linden Hills Park for Minneapolis Urban tennis when he was 16 years old. Reid is currently the Girls Varsity Coach for Minneapolis South and the Boys Junior Varsity Coach for Eagan. He is PTR certified and especially loves coaching the “Stars” students.

Viet Pham

Viet Pham has worked at Fred Wells since 2006, primarily involved in high performance player development. He also helped initiate the Tennis2College program at FWTEC. Viet started his teaching with the Wheaton Tennis Academy, at the Decathlon Athletic Club, initially as a tennis pro and then for the last year of his four-year tenure as the Player Development Director of the Academy Training Team. During this period Viet worked as part of the USTA/Northern Section’s High Performance Program Regional Training Centers in Kansas City, Saint Louis, Iowa City, Houston and Crandon Park, Miami. He also served as a USTA/Zonals coach in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Pompano Beach, Florida; and Old Westbury, New York. He traveled as a private coach to many of the regional nationals and the major Super Nationals and has been the summer Director of Junior Tennis at several local country clubs. Viet has also worked at the Life Time Fitness Centers in St Louis Park and Oakdale. In 2002, Viet started the Gopher Tennis Academy in conjunction with the unveiling of the new Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota. As the premiere training ground for the USTA/Northern Section’s elite, the program drew the top players from every age group across the four state area.

Nguyen Vo

Nguyen Vo is USTPA certified and is currently a Co-Head coach for the Varsity Girls Tennis team at Washburn High School in Minneapolis. He started playing tennis at the age of 4 and won his first tennis tournament when he was six. Nguyen played at the University of Minnesota in 1990. Nguyen has been a head coach with the InnerCity Tennis Junior Summer Program since June, 2010 and donates his time and expertise as a volunteer coach for the Kidspeed program at InnerCity Tennis. Nguyen currently coaches for our Junior and Adult programs as well as Women’s Day League here at FWTEC.

Dave Nelson has been PTR certified Associate Tennis Instructor since 2006. He worked as Head Instructor for St. Paul Urban Tennis summer program in 2008 and 2009 and currently coaches for the Junior Programs at FWTEC. Dave also volunteers time coaching and helping local athletes and truly believes that great things happen when you work hard and never give up.

Chi Pham

Chi Pham will be involved with the High Performance Junior Program here at The Fort.  Chi brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the staff.  As a player, Chi was a former top 20 USTA nationally-ranked junior (finishing each age group in the top 30 nationally). He was ranked #18 in the country in the 18 & unders in 2004 and was invited to be a part of the USTA Player Development National Team. Chi was also ranked #1 in the USTA/Northern Section in the 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s.  After graduating from The Blake School, he went on to play collegiate tennis at the University of Minnesota from 2004-2008, serving as co-captain his senior year and helped lead the Gophers to a top 15 ITA National Ranking. As the Assistant Director of Junior Tennis for the Gopher Tennis Academy, he and his brother, Viet coached over 10 nationally-ranked players during his time there.  In his first year as Head Coach at Breck in 2012, he led the Mustangs to the MN State Class A Title.

Matt Edin

Matt is currently a graduate at St. Catherine’s University seeking his Master’s of Arts in Occupational Theropy. He earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Excercise Science at Concordia College in Moorehead in 2011. Matt is a graduate of Staples-Motley High School where he earned varsity letters in tennis, basketball and football and appeared in the Minnesota State High School Tennis Tournament on two occasions. He played collegiate tennis at Concordia College and earned All-Conference honors in each of the four years in singles and and twice in doubles.Matt has lead teaching and directing experience as the Moorhead Park and Rec Tennis Coordinator for two summers. This past season he was an Assistant Coach for the St. Catherine’s Women’s TEnnis Team and during the summer was the Head Assistant Pro at St. Paul Tennis Club. There Matt taught private lessons to players of all ages and coached as the Lead Pro for several adult and junior tennis groups.

Judy started playing tennis at age of 8. A native of Minnesota, she went to Burnsville High School and was a MN High School State Champion and Runner up. Judy played Division 1 tennis at Penn State University from 199-2003 and graduated with a degree in Marketing. She has taught tennis to adults and juniors of all ability levels at Lilydale Tennis Club, St. Paul Jewish Community Center, Penn State Sports Camp and for Special Olympics. Judy presently works at Target Corporation within its Marketing Department. She is excited to be part of The Fort tema to help players learn, improve their game and have fun!

Tom Miller

Tom provides leadership for the Tennis2College programs. Tom started at FWTEC in June, 2012, and has worked in the areas of nonprofit leadership, youth development, education, and philanthropy for the past 20 years. He most recently served as Principal of Minneapolis-based TCM Consulting, Program Officer for The McKnight Foundation, and Youth Department Director for East Side Neighborhood Services. He has a Master’s Degree in School Psychology from the University of Rhode Island and a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development from the University of Minnesota. While he’s an avid cyclist and cross country skier, Tom is very excited to change his tennis status from rusty adult to aspiring intermediate.

Justin coordinates afterschool, evening, and weekend programs for grades 6th-8th, including: The Fort Afterschool Program, Boy’s Leadership Team, Girl’s Squad, and Saturday Homework Lab. Justin has a Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies from Macalester College, where he was Co-Captain of the tennis team. Recently, he served as a Global Learning Program Leader, and taught elementary and middle school students in Costa Rica public schools. In his hometown of Madison, Justin served an Assistant Head Tennis Pro at Seminole Tennis Club, and as Volunteer Instructor in the Rising Stars tennis program serving economically disadvantaged youth.

Amira Jama

Amira works primarily on launching and expanding the after school, evening and weekend programs for 6th-8th grades, including: The Fort Afterschool Program, Boys Leadership Team, Girls Squad, and Saturday Tennis & Tutoring. In particular, Amira will be serving as program coordinator for Girls Squad during the 2012-2013 school year. These programs will reach approximately 50 youth annually, and promote health and fitness, educational achievement, youth service and leadership, and life skill development.
Amira is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota, where she majored in Family Social Science and minored in Public Health. Amira has most recently served as a Healthcare Reform intern at CAPI-USA, where she helped refugee and immigrant people navigate the healthcare system. She has also served as a Tutor for Forest Hills Elementary School in her hometown of Eden Prairie, as well as at the Somali Education Center in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood.

Matea handles communications needs at Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center–media outreach, internal communications, social media and website updates are a few of the things on her list. She is a 2012 graduate of Macalester College, where she majored in English with a minor in Media Studies. Her first “real” job was an administrative position with a local board game company. She has since done freelance communications work for a variety of organizations. While she hasn’t played much tennis (shhhh) she very much gets the whole sports thing, and spends a lot of her free time running, playing soccer and rock climbing.

Ric Yates

Ric Yates has served on the Boards of the St. Paul Urban Tennis program and the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic and is a member of the Pine Tree Apple Hall of Fame. He was the Tennis Director at the Lilydale Club and coached the men’s team at the College of St. Thomas for 6 years. In 1981 Ric received the Ward Burton Junior Development Award as well as the NWPTA Service Award in 1986. He was inducted into the USTA Northern Hall of Fame in 2001 and has been coaching at FWTEC since 2007.

Jim Dixon has been a certified USPTA member since 1973 and USRSA certified stringer for over 30 years. He has been a Head Pro and manager at Como Tennis Club, Associate pro at Lilydale Club and has been a pro at FWTEC since 2006. Jim was also a Lilydale Vets tournament director for 20 years, Prince advisory/pro team member for 25 years, USTA Adult Leagues NTRP sectional head verifier, USTA Adult Leagues NTRP national advisory board member for 3 years, Mounds Park Academy boys JV tennis coach for 1 season and is currently a coach for Cretin Derham High School boys JV tennis coach.
